Did you know National Repeal Day is today, December 5?
Repeal Day is celebrated annually on December 5, and 2024 will mark the 91st anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition in the United States.
Prohibition, the nationwide legal ban on the production, importation, transportation, and sale of alcoholic beverages, was enacted in 1920 with the passage of the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. However, this experiment in social engineering proved to be highly unpopular and largely unenforceable. After 13 years, the 21st Amendment was ratified on December 5, 1933, repealing Prohibition and restoring the legal status of alcohol. President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the 21st Amendment, doing away with Prohibition. He famously said, "What America needs now is a drink." FDR was a big fan of the martini.
December 5 is observed as National Repeal Day to commemorate this historical event. This day provides an opportunity to celebrate the end of Prohibition and the restoration of the freedom to consume alcohol legally. Many bars, restaurants, and other establishments often host Prohibition-themed parties and cocktail events to mark the occasion.
So, in 2024, December 5 will again be a day to raise a glass and toast the end of Prohibition in the United States.
